McKinsey Case Interview: What to Expect and How to Prepare
McKinsey's case interview is built around structured problem solving, and it's frequently the most structure-heavy of the MBB interviews — expect the interviewer to probe hard on how you built your framework, not just what you concluded.
Format
McKinsey typically runs a mix of interviewer-led cases (the interviewer steers you through a sequence of specific questions) and candidate-led cases (you drive the structure and pacing yourself, closer to a real client problem). Many candidates also complete McKinsey's own digital assessment, the Solve Game, as a separate step before or alongside interviews.
What's evaluated
- Structuring — can you take an open-ended business problem and break it into a MECE issue tree?
- Quantitative reasoning — can you work through calculations cleanly and sanity-check the result?
- Business judgment — do your conclusions and recommendations actually make sense for the situation?
- Communication — can you walk the interviewer through your thinking clearly, especially in interviewer-led cases where you're responding to their specific prompts in sequence?
How to prepare
- Practice structuring first, calculating second. McKinsey interviewers routinely ask you to walk through your framework out loud before touching a single number — see How to Structure a Case Interview.
- Get comfortable with both interviewer-led and candidate-led formats. Interviewer-led cases reward responsiveness to specific questions; candidate-led cases reward driving your own structure without being prompted at each step.
- Don't over-rely on memorized frameworks. McKinsey cases are often built to require adapting a standard framework, not reciting it — see Why Memorizing Case Interview Frameworks Doesn't Work.
- Practice the common case types. Profitability, market entry, and market sizing cover most of what comes up.
Practice building the structure, not just reading about it
The fastest way to get comfortable with McKinsey's structuring-heavy format is to build issue trees yourself, from prompts you haven't seen before. Practice case structuring on Meceify →

What format does McKinsey use for case interviews?
Typically a mix of interviewer-led and candidate-led cases, plus McKinsey's own Solve Game (formerly the Problem Solving Test) as a separate assessment. Interviewer-led cases involve the interviewer guiding you through specific questions; candidate-led cases expect you to drive the structure yourself.
What is McKinsey actually evaluating in a case interview?
Structured problem solving, quantitative reasoning, business judgment, and communication, with structuring an unfamiliar problem into a clear framework weighted especially heavily.
